POST 11, PART 3: Remember how nice sleep is and the blends from Post 8 that can give you blissful dreams? Yeah, a baby with colic is going to totally do a Wreck it Ralph to that! Do not go quietly into the dark, wait, yes–yes we do want to go quietly into the dark and sleep between feedings! So we are going to turn to our next BFF’s and watch our diet (nursing mom’s watch for offending foods like caffeine, high fat diets, and spicy foods) and try one of the following helpers: Roman Chamomile, one drop in a bowl of warm water and soak a washcloth in it, wring it out and use it as a warm compress on your baby’s stomach; DiGize, dilute one drop in a tsp of carrier oil and massage into the baby’s abdomen and on the bottoms of their feet (it has fennel in it so avoid this option if there is family history of seizure); or try dill, copaiba, frankincense or peppermint and rub your baby’s back and bottoms of the feet. *Keep peppermint away from the chest/nose/mouth of your baby as this oil is very strong and has been reported to cause bronchial spasms in rare instances.* Crying babies make us want to cry too! Additional tips for calming a crying baby is to put Peace and Calming on yourself (mom/dad/partner) and hold your baby to soothe them and the scent will diffuse around them and calm them. You’ll stop wanting to cry and so will your baby. You can put some on your hands and wave over your babies head–don’t hold it directly under their nose. Lavender is another good option, although I love the effect of Peace and Calming myself.
